Course Aim

At the Tufts Headache & Face Pain Symposium, attendees will gain comprehensive insights into diagnosing common headache and facial pain conditions. They'll also learn to address temporomandibular disorders with appliance treatments and explore advanced migraine therapies. The symposium emphasizes hands-on demonstrations, such as injection techniques for pain relief and neurological examinations. Participants will also differentiate between dental and non-dental tooth pain origins, understand pain sources in the nasal and sinus regions, and appreciate the role of quality sleep in pain management. Moreover, the event highlights the correlation between headaches, facial pain, and their clinical implications, all while offering a platform for expert discussions, including reflections from a global authority on orofacial pain and evidence-based reviews on pain treatment methods.

Course Description

Headaches and facial pain, often presenting together, can form intricate clinical patterns that pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. While headaches frequently emerge in medical settings, facial pain is a typical concern in dental environments. Regrettably, dental assessments of facial pain can sometimes overlook concurrent headaches, leading to an under-treatment of the condition. Dentists might mistakenly attribute most facial pain to dental issues, while physicians could misdiagnose it as trigeminal neuralgia.

Within dentistry, orofacial pain has recently emerged as a distinct subfield, bridging the gap between dental and medical practices. This specialization addresses multifaceted pain disorders spanning the face, head, and neck, demanding collaborative interventions from diverse medical and dental specialists. This two-day symposium gathers experts from fields like primary care, neurology, dentistry, psychology, and otolaryngology to pool their expertise.

The symposium's core aim is to empower both dentists and physicians with a deeper comprehension of headache and facial pain, enhancing their treatment approaches whether these conditions manifest individually or together. While an array of disorders will be tackled, special emphasis lies on the frequently encountered temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and migraines.

The Tufts Craniofacial Pain Center, under the visionary leadership of Noshir R. Mehta, BDS, MDS, DMD, MS, has been at the forefront of treating patients with headache and facial pain. Under his guidance, the center has gained global recognition. Dr. Mehta played a pivotal role in integrating dentistry with broader medical practices, particularly in the domain of orofacial pain. His collaborative approach saw the inclusion of eminent personalities like Egilius L.H. Spierings, MD, PhD, a linchpin in fostering synergy between the worlds of medicine and dentistry.

This symposium, currently in its sixth iteration, is a brainchild of Dr. Spierings. A stalwart in the field, he collaborated with the Tufts Craniofacial Pain Center for nearly ten years. Upholding his legacy are Drs. Donavon Khosrow Aroni and Alberto Malacarne, dental orofacial pain experts trained under his guidance, advocating for interdisciplinary cooperation, scientific rigor, and patient-centric learning.

We warmly extend an invitation to all medical and dental professionals eager to delve deeper into the realms of headache and facial pain. This symposium will not only cater to those new to the field but also offer advanced insights for seasoned practitioners. Engaging discussions form a crucial component, facilitating fresh perspectives on the diverse subjects explored.
