Course Aim

Grasp the intricate details of the TMJ, facial and chewing muscles, nerves, and related structures. Use this understanding to diagnose and treat orofacial pain and sleep apnea. Gain insights into various interventions for Orofacial pain and sleep apnea.

Course Description

The expert anatomy faculty will conduct detailed dissections, showcasing various structures. The primary emphasis will be on understanding practical anatomy that plays a critical role in diagnosing conditions like headaches, sleep apnea, trigeminal neuralgia, muscle and occipital pain. Additionally, this knowledge will be informative for physical examinations and treatments like nerve blocks (for the mandibular, maxillary, occipital regions, and more), trigger point injections, and chemodenervation. A keen understanding of this will also help in recognizing potential side effects of injection therapy. Participants will benefit from a hands-on experience in our Cadaver Lab.

Orofacial pain encompasses discomfort in the face, head, or neck regions and is an issue faced by up to 10% of individuals. This pain can arise from various causes:

  • TMJ disorders: Symptoms might include jaw pain, facial or ear discomfort, sounds from the jaw joints, and restricted jaw movement.
  • Dental issues: Conditions like tooth decay, cavities, and gum diseases can trigger orofacial pain.
  • Headaches: Migraines and tension headaches often manifest as pain in the face and head.
  • Other medical conditions: Sinus infections, trigeminal neuralgia, and even cancers might be sources of orofacial pain.

Specifically, TMJ disorders, a prevalent subtype of orofacial pain, can be attributed to injuries (like those from accidents), TMJ overuse, arthritis within the TMJ, or other health conditions including connective tissue or autoimmune disorders.

Furthermore, dental sleep medicine is a specialized branch dedicated to addressing sleep-associated breathing issues, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. OSA, a severe condition, is characterized by periodic breathing interruptions during sleep, leading to potential health complications like high blood pressure, heart ailments, and stroke.

What is the return on investment of this course?

This course, priced at $2,500, presents a tangible opportunity for significant returns, both professionally and financially. When examining the broader context, the statistics reflect the widespread prevalence of orofacial pain and sleep-related disorders in the general population. Given the ever-growing demand for treatments in these areas, professionals equipped with specialized knowledge stand at the forefront of providing much-needed care.

Now, let's delve into the financial metrics. A single dental sleep apnea appliance can command a price range of $2,000 to $6,000 (depending on area and medical insurance billing). With this in perspective, by merely offering and successfully treating just one patient with a sleep apnea appliance post-training, you can recoup the entire cost of the course and potentially realize a profit. If you scale this up, treating even a modest number of patients each month can translate to substantial revenue, far outstripping the initial course investment. With the knowledge you gain from this course you will also be treating the patients comprehensively and looking for solutions to correct their medical conditions, rather than only treating the problems they have in the oral cavity.
